Hake Haul 2

Hake Haul 2

Description

Portrait of puffin with hake for a chick on Matinicus Rock, Maine. Atlantic puffins were hunted down to its very last two birds here by 1902. Early conservationists nursed the population back to a few dozen pairs by the 1980s. Then, Project Puffin, which brought puffins back to other islands in the world's first successful island restoration of a seabird, began managing Matincus Rock. Today, there are more than 500 pairs of puffins.
