Haddock Haul 1

Haddock Haul 1

Description

A puffin comes in with haddock for a chick on Seal Island, Maine. Atlantic puffins were wiped out here by hunters in the 1880s. In 1984, Audubon researcher Steve Kress began bringing puffin chicks to Seal from 800 miles away in Newfoundland. Kress hoped the birds would grow to remember Seal Island, not Newfoundland, as home. Kress guessed right. In 2024, Seal Island set a new record of 672 active breeding burrows. It is part of the world's first successful island seabird restoration.
